Murder charges against a mother and her 14-year-old son in connection with a shooting at a Chicago restaurant have been dropped.

On Monday, June 26, the Cook County State Attorney's office said that charges against Carlisha Hood and her son have been dropped following a review of the case. "In light of emerging evidence" the charges against the two in connection with the June 18 shooting have been dismissed, police confirmed. "Based upon the facts, evidence, and the law we are unable to meet our burden of proof in the prosecution of these cases," reads the statement.

The 35-year-old Hood and her teenage son were booked on murder charges following the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Jeremy Brown. According to authorities, Hood got into an argument with Brown while waiting for food in line at the restaurant. She texted him to come inside and at that point, the argument turned physical when Brown allegedly punched Hood in the head. Her son withdrew a firearm and shot the man in the back.

The pair left the scene shortly after. Prosecutors argued that Hood told her son to keep shooting Brown with intent to kill. They also accused Hood of telling her son to shoot Brown's girlfriend. Brown was not taken to a nearby hospital because he was pronounced dead at the scene. Surveillance video of the incident shows the moment the teenager opened fire on Brown, who was said to have intimated Hood in the lead-up to the incident. It is unclear what they were fighting about.

Hood was initially placed behind bars on $3 million bond and was scheduled to make an appearance in court on Monday. Details regarding her son were not released because he is still a minor.
