A Minnesota reporter was fired this week for rocking a “Make America Great Again” hat during an assignment.

NBC affiliate KTTC-TV terminated journalist James Bunner this week, shortly after he was seen wearing the hat while covering a Donald Trump rally in Rochester. News director Noel Sederstrom told BuzzFeed that Bunner’s accessory choice violated a policy implemented by many news outlets.

“We don’t allow our people to wear campaign clothing while on assignment,” he explained.

Bunner has not publicly addressed his termination.

As pointed out by BuzzFeed, the reporter did not hesitate to express his political views on social media. Just days after Trump won the 2016 presidential election, Bunner took to Facebook to express his support.

“I never have been a big Trump fan. I love a lot of what he’s saying and believe if he could live up to all of these promises he’s made about immigration and the Supreme Court, he could be a fantastic president,” he wrote. “Look on the bright side, at least now Obama’s legacy has been destroyed, Hillary Clinton will never be president, and there’s gonna be a whole lot of pissed off liberals in the morning.”

Sederstrom insists Bunner’s political views were not a factor in the station’s decision.
