Two days ago, I reached out to Banksy's PR woman Jo Brooks, the person who facilitated Banksy's Village Voice interview, about a Twitter account that appeared during the street artist's New York residency, "Better Out Than In." At first, @banksyny seemed like the real deal, tweeting blurbs that lined up with what Banksy was doing in the city, or so we thought. Turns out, @banksyny is just a fake with good timing. Jo Brooks sent us the following email:
You're welcome, Jo.
Today, @banksyny tweeted a link to Cafe Press, a site that is selling Banksy's "Better Out Than In" T-shirt for $17.99.
Here's one I made earlier http://t.co/JuVMPUQZAx
The real Banksy made the pattern for the T-shirts available for free online. He also writes on his website, "Now available—the official Banksy New York residency souvenir T shirt (you have to take the jpeg to a copy store and make it yourself)."
It seems like the Twitter impostor is trying to turn a profit on Banksy's fame. But we all know that the real Banksy wanted us to have these babies for free.
