The sequester cuts from Congress will reduce the amount of free exhibits on view each day at the Smithsonian Institution. It will also force unpaid leave for U.S. Park Police officers who protect national monuments in Washington, New York City and elsewhere.

The secretary for the museum said it made administrative cuts but now needs to reduce its security contract for gallery attendance and consequently cannot keep all its galleries open at once. Rolling gallery closures will appear after May 1. Because of the $41 million reduction that needs to be made to its budget, the museum will probably cancel or postpone exhibits slated for 2014 and 2015.
