If you want understated style that won't break the bank, you should check out Onassis. Casual unbuttoned shirts, comfortable knitwear, and unstructured blazers are reasonably priced, and the quality on them is pretty great, too. Sure, it might be a chain, but this SoHo spot is the only domestic outpost, making it rare enough that you’ll be hard-pressed to find another dude wearing the same exact kit you are.

10-year-old brand Kitsuné chose to open its first non-Parisian outpost beneath the NoMad Hotel, a stone’s throw away from the Flatiron District and close to nightlife hotspot the Ace Hotel. If you’re not familiar with the brand, its wares provide a luxurious way to look as subtly stylish as possible. You’ll find jeans made of premium Japanese denim, knits made of cashmere, and colorful Quoddy loafers handsewn in Maine. If accessories are more your thing, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by store-exclusive products from tiemaker Alexander Olch, and an in-store installation from the artisan minds behind WANT Les Essentiels de La Vie.

Nepenthes is the Japanese company whose brand umbrella contains South2West8, Engineered Garments, Needles, and other cult labels. About two years ago, they took over an old sewing shop near their U.S. headquarters and fashioned it into a combination boutique and art gallery. Besides offering their own quality clothing and accessories, they also have a good selection of magazines, small goods, and a rotating pop-up shop that has hosted Mark McNairy, Takahiro Miyashita’s TheSoloist, Perfecto Brand by Schott, and most recently, Batten Sportswear.

Paul Birardi and Eddy Chai have been around a while with their shop, but recently they’ve proven that their ears are still to the ground. Where else can you walk in and find white-hot Japanese brands like Bedwin and the Heartbreakers, White Mountaineering, and Master-Piece? Couple that with their steady stock of cult brands like Our Legacy, Engineered Garments, and Comme des Garcons, and you’ve got a pretty good selection. We haven’t even mentioned their impressive collection of apothecary products, like their in-house candle line.

This isn’t your grandpa’s Carhartt store. The European branch of the workwear company has been a hit with the urban youth market for decades, and only recently has the streetwear-friendly line hit stateside with its first domestic store. Located in SoHo, inside you’ll find pricey goods and limited-edition collaborations with labels with street cred like A.P.C., Adam Kimmel, and Fragment design.

Crew in-store shops, Emil and Sandy Corsillo recently opened their Brooklyn retail outpost to share a few of their favorite things with the neighborhood. Walk right upstairs and you’ll encounter exclusive Japanese brands like Kapital, Waste(Twice) and Colimbo, shoes from Thorogood and Rancourt, as well as edible sundries like space ice cream and Mast Brothers chocolate bars. Their newest claim to fame? Their just-launched series of collaborations: The Hill-Side & Co.

Ronnie Fieg’s Manhattan outpost is notable because not only does it house some really dope limited-edition drops of his own design, you can also find selections from Grenson, Sebago, Caminando, Danner, and other makers of quality footwear. You also have to know where to find it. Located behind Atrium NYC in SoHo, it’s almost reminiscent of a long-gone SoHo retail space that also required a little guesswork: Nom De Guerre.
