10-year-old brand Kitsuné chose to open its first non-Parisian outpost beneath the NoMad Hotel, a stone’s throw away from the Flatiron District and close to nightlife hotspot the Ace Hotel. If you’re not familiar with the brand, its wares provide a luxurious way to look as subtly stylish as possible. You’ll find jeans made of premium Japanese denim, knits made of cashmere, and colorful Quoddy loafers handsewn in Maine. If accessories are more your thing, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by store-exclusive products from tiemaker Alexander Olch, and an in-store installation from the artisan minds behind WANT Les Essentiels de La Vie.

Nepenthes is the Japanese company whose brand umbrella contains South2West8, Engineered Garments, Needles, and other cult labels. About two years ago, they took over an old sewing shop near their U.S. headquarters and fashioned it into a combination boutique and art gallery. Besides offering their own quality clothing and accessories, they also have a good selection of magazines, small goods, and a rotating pop-up shop that has hosted Mark McNairy, Takahiro Miyashita’s TheSoloist, Perfecto Brand by Schott, and most recently, Batten Sportswear.

Paul Birardi and Eddy Chai have been around a while with their shop, but recently they’ve proven that their ears are still to the ground. Where else can you walk in and find white-hot Japanese brands like Bedwin and the Heartbreakers, White Mountaineering, and Master-Piece? Couple that with their steady stock of cult brands like Our Legacy, Engineered Garments, and Comme des Garcons, and you’ve got a pretty good selection.
