The quintissential red carpet was unfurled last night as celebrities rolled en masse to the Hollywood and Highland Center for the 2012 Academy Awards. The Oscars always inspire people to dress to the nines, so of course men and women went all out. Designers like Tom Ford competed on the red carpet with Burberry's Christopher Bailey and Armani for style supremacy.
Who did it best? Who couldn't quite pull it off? Check out our Style Recap: The Best and Worst Dressed At The 2012 Academy Awards.
plummer
Best: Christopher Plummer
Last night the 82-year-old Plummer won Best Supporting Actor for his role in Beginners. This midnight blue velvet blazer with contrast piping? Definitely not for beginners, but rocked with class by a pro.
downey
Worst: Robert Downey Jr.
Sunglasses indoors? Pants that are way too long? Shiny metallic bowtie? Dude, leave the douchey Iron Man accessories at home.
pitt
Best: Brad Pitt
Pitt embodies the style we like to call "Swag Jesus." Angelina Jolie ain't bad arm candy to have either.
jean
Worst: Jean Dujardin
Congratulations on the Best Actor win and all, but that wing collar is not doing you any favors, and that jacket is slightly too big. Having a tailor take in the sides would've been ideal, instead it looks like a rental.
diddy
Best: Diddy
Diddy did it. The slim peaked lapels are killing it, and the Caesar with the part is the black guy's equivalent of the side-part hairstyle that's sweeping the nation. Clean, classic, and manly.
clooney
Worst: George Clooney
Usually, Clooney does pretty well for himself. We guess that's why our expectations were riding high on this big night. He let us down with the too-long jacket sleeves and by buttoning the bottom button (come on dude, rookie mistake!). But he is smashing Stacy Keibler so... he still wins.
pharrell
Best: Pharrell
Pharrell went all-out in this Lanvin ensemble. We all knew he would clean up well, and he definitely made us proud. The velvet bowtie is also a nice touch.
nolte
Worst: Nick Nolte
We aren't sure if Nick Nolte is auditioning for a "Bad Santa" sequel or that one creepy, troubled uncle that always gets drunk at weddings.
rockspade
Best: Chris Rock / Worst: David Spade
Rock is doing thick-rimmed glasses right: slim-cut suit, natty bowtie (the "natty bow" is a term we have now officially coined), and an acceptable afro.
Spade on the other hand... is losing. Awful pants, unbuttoned jacket... and just plain bad sneakers. We have no problems with rocking sneakers with a suit, but only if it's done well, meaning with tailored pants and no bunching at the bottom. Right now he looks like a rebellious skater kid who decided to dress up for prom but plans on getting really high in the bathroom.
cohen
Best: Sacha Baron Cohen
Points for originality, extra points for having two hot dates, and bonus points for stealing the bottom of Rick Ross' beard.
cooper
Worst: Bradley Cooper's Facial Hair
The Legend of Dirty Sanchez continues.
pratt
Best: Chris Pratt
The Parks & Recreation castmember may act stupid on the show, but his red carpet game is nothing but smart. Plus, Anna Faris' dress looks like something she could rock the Galaxy Foamposites with.
lillard
Worst: Matthew Lillard
Square-toed shoes, ugly facial hair, super-wide lapel, dorky glasses... the list goes on.
hanks
Best: Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks looked amazing in this Tom Ford double-breasted shawl collar tux. Impeccable, really, especially when mixed with that gruff beard.
hill
Worst: Jonah Hill
This entire outfit belongs on 21 DUMP Street.
segel
Best: Jason Segel
Another funnyman who cleans up well: Jason Segel. Yeah, the bowtie could be straightened, but given his personality, we'll let it slide.
haley
Worst: Haley Joel Osment
Appropriately, Haley Joel Osment showed up in a ghost-colored tie. We see bad color coordination.
crystal
Best: Billy Crystal
The Oscars host dressed down for the Vanity Fair afterparty but still did it well, channeling Tom Hanks' subtly mind-blowing double-breasted shawl collar jacket steez, and a banded collar shirt. This is dressing tonal done right: it makes you look more like a jetsetting playboy rather than a vodka-swilling douchebag.
kermit
Best: Kermit The Frog
It's easy being green when you're rocking a bespoke Brooks Brothers tuxedo.
