This past year was a pretty wild one in style. If last year was the era when dudes first started to experiment with tried and true formulas, then 2012 was the time when guys took serious risks with already established style. Tons of athletes, actors, and musicians may have appeared fashionable or caught our eye for a moment, but very few had a true sense of their own style that was consistently fresh throughout the year.
We combed through the red carpets, street style, and performances to find the most stylish celebrities who weren't hopping on trends, but were forging their own steez in a sea of mediocrity. These are the dudes who know what works, but who aren't scared to switch it up either. After a full year of watching these guys lead the pack, here are The 25 Most Stylish Celebrities of 2012.
By James Harris (@Dr_TacoMD)
25. Victor Cruz
The favorite wide receiver of New York Giants fans was this year's breakout stylish athlete. Ever since Victor Cruz quickly became quarterback Eli Manning's preferred target on the field, he's also become one of the few athletes that dresses well enough to be friends with Anna Wintour and sit front row at premiere runway shows. Whether he's sharply dressed in crisp suiting, rocking the latest designer pieces we're used to seeing on Kanye, or showing off streetwear that sells out instantly, he's salsa danced his way to being one of the most stylish dudes of 2012. Sure other athletes dress well and have won championships, but how many can say they cut the ribbon to kick off New York Fashion Week?
24. John Mayer
If you've been spotted wearing Visvim nearly head-to-toe, chances are you're going to make our list even if your general behavior and music aren't really our thing. Thankfully for John Mayer, this isn't a popularity contest, and the singer definitely gets props for rocking obscure Japanese workwear brands and channeling his inner Bohemian, even if some of these Visvim pieces cost several thousand dollars.
23. Elijah Wood
Elijah Wood may have some of the most disturbing eyes out there, but his recent stylish outfits have distracted us from those creeper peepers. As he tours the Earth promoting his latest foray into Middle Earth, Elijah's been hitting up red carpets left and right and repping hard for his favorite shop, Brooklyn Tailors. The Williamsburg-based suiting destination kitted Elijah out with slim suits that would give any Hobbit a handsome appearance.
22. Rick Ross
Rick Ross had a prolific year in 2012. His album God Forvives, I Don't and two mixtapes Rich Forever and The Black Bar Mitzvah dominated the airwaves, and his Maybach Music Group is a veritable empire that's primed to go off in 2013. The avid sports fan rocked plenty varsity jackets this past year, and his furs and vivid colors that were fit for a pharaoh proved once and for all that big dudes have plenty of style.
21. Tyson Chandler
If you're 7'1" people are going to notice you no matter what, so why not look your best? Joining fellow New York Knick players Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler is the latest baller to catch the fashion bug. On the red carpet the champion center shines in more formal wear, but it's the goth ninja look he's been seen sporting a few times around town and other successful style risks that makes Tyson the tallest well-dressed celebrity of 2012.
20. Scott Disick
Whether you love to hate him or just hate him, you can't deny that Scott Disick dresses like a boss. What we're not so sure about is whether his assholeness fuels his swagger, or if his swagger fuels his assholeness? Whichever it is, it's a self-perpetuating machine that is necessary when you're basically fam with 'Ye. After earning Kanye's praise for his Astor & Black bespoke suits last year, Disick has taken on the quintessential Kardashian quality: we're not sure why he's relevant, but at least he looks good and dressed well while on camera.
19. Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Not only did Joseph Gordon-Levitt go from having one of the most unexpected career turnarounds in recent history (From 3rd Rock from the Sun to The Dark Knight Rises. Cotdamn!) but 2012 was the year he went from the lame twee guy we associated with 500 Days of Summer to a certified A-lister who kills it in any suit he touches. Who knows if Gordon-Levitt will be the next Bruce Wayne, but he's certainly dressing like he wants the part.
18. Mac Miller
Complex's very own Man of Next Year is also one of this year's most stylish celebs. As Mac Miller finishes up on the much-anticipated Watching Movies with the Sound Off album that's set for 2013, he's become the face of streetwear. One thing we love about Mac is that, as he's blown up, his clothing tastes haven't changed much - the man knows what he likes. The rapper spent most of 2012 touring and performing in BBC, Bape, ONLY NY, Stussy, and other streetwear brands we all know and love.
17. Kid Cudi
Kid Cudi is one of the most versatile guys on this list. Though he's on board with G.O.O.D. Music, one of the most stylish crews in the game, Cudi has a style that's all his own. Whether he's uncovering the best brands before they blow up, such as BWGH, or evolving the rocker look he developed in 2012, Cudi's definitely gonna be a steady presence on best-dressed lists.
16. Henrik Lundqvist
When he wasn't busy stopping shots and leading the NY Rangers to their strongest finish since 1997, Henrik Lundqvist was taking over for Sean Avery this past year as the best dressed hockey player in the country. When featured on Mr. Porter, the Swedish-born goaltender admitted that he had a stretch of trying different styles where he made some mistakes. But he's learned from those mistakes and has now settled on a penchant for on-point tailoring that's so fire it may jeopardize his vocation.
15. Eddie Redmayne
Eddie Redmayne is the dude your girl is thinking about during sexy time for his breakout roles in last year's My Week with Marilyn and the upcoming Les Miserables. And also for being one of the only dudes who could pull off a green velvet suit. This Brit would've made this list for that bold move alone, but as his steez shows, this dude is no stranger to style—he starred in an ad campaign for Burberry in 2008 and 2012.
14. Big Sean
We've been spotting Big Sean in wavy clothing all year long, so it's no surprise that the G.O.O.D. Music member is one of 2012's most stylish. Back in November, he told us that he doesn't follow any strict guide to dressing, and dresses however he's feeling. Well if that means rocking designer pieces without losing his preference for a more athletically-inclined look, then he's setting one hell of a code.
13. Dwyane Wade
It's no secret now that NBA players have been dressing well for a minute, and Dwyane Wade is the man we have to thank for these big and tall dudes not looking like they shop at exclusively at Big & Tall. The Miami Heat guard is the vanguard leading guys like Lebron James, Kevin Durant, and Russell Westbrook on a sartorial fast break away from the garbage we were too used to seeing athletes wear.
12. Theophilus London
Any old white fashion editor who thinks Kanye is too mainstream and doesn't know how to pronounce A$AP will tell you that Theophilus London is their favorite rapper. A fixture on the fashion scene who fuses rock, hip-hop, and hipster styles to create an instantly recognizable look, Theophilus was included in Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld's recent book The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s Classic Revisited. With friends like these, Theophilus is gonna be on these lists for a long time.
11. Pusha-T
A little over a year ago, we started noticing Pusha-T mixing in European designer pieces to his wardrobe. Since then, the G.O.O.D. Music member hasn't looked back, and has led the pack in rocking Givenchy, Balenciaga, Rick Owens, etc., as well as bringing serious shine to lesser-known brands like En Noir and Ale et Ange. In addition to putting various fuckboys on blast and working on Wrath of Caine, we're excited to see how Pusha pushes style weight in 2013.
10. Jay-Z
Not to start off the top ten with a "no shit" pick or anything, but no shit Jay-Z's up here. Any doubts that HOV was gonna fall into "dad style" territory with Blue Ivy Carter were very quickly brushed aside as the most successful man in hip-hop continued to set trends in 2012 and seamlessly mix the ultra-luxe with the ultra-street. Catch Jay courtside in camos and a black tee one night and in a flawless tuxedo the next. Like the reigning king said, "I will not lose."
9. Ryan Gosling
After a killer 2011, everyone's favorite Canadian kept it going strong in 2012. Ryan Gosling may not have been involved with any major projects this past year, but his style both on and off the red carpet were continuously next level. If you're able to body the red carpet with updates on traditional menswear and also be on the forefront of trends in your off-time, then yes, you are in our top 10.
8. Robert Pattinson
Even if you're not a fan of the Twilight franchise, you have to admit that Robert Pattinson killed it this year. Whether riding trends we co-sign like the pictured baseball jacket, or pushing the boundaries in a green suit, it's obvious this guy is one sharp dressed man. We'll forgive him for being a tween hearthrob (which seems like such a creepy position to be in) if he continues to dress this way.
7. Zac Efron
We don't really talk much about Zac Efron on Complex, but there is no denying that this newly minted A-lister is doing all the right things in terms of style. For a teen darling, he flat out dresses well. Hell, for a guy who's most notable role in 2012 involved him getting pissed on, he flat out dresses well. If he keeps it up, we might be forced to forget the fact that his most notable role in 2012 involved him getting pissed on.
6. Daniel Craig
If you're the man playing James Bond, then you're under as much English scrutiny as Kate Middleton's baby bump and Prince Harry's balls, so you better be one savvy dresser off the screen. Luckily, Daniel Craig has mastered the art of appearing in 007-esque suits when needed, and being snapped in more casual workwear that works just as well for the grizzled Brit.
5. Yasiin Bey
After finally convincing us to call him Yasiin Bey, the man formerly known as Mos Def took 2012 to prove that his style is definitely consistent. Bey is the current master of mixing prints with vintage-inspired garments with contemporary next level style. And he somehow never looks like he's trying too hard or reaching too far. Hopefully now that his style is incredibly on point he can focus on a 2013 album.
4. Frank Ocean
This past year nearly belonged entirely to Frank Ocean. His much-hyped album Channel Orange exceeded expectations, the singer broke down barriers on his own terms, and he did it all in impeccable style. The OFWGKTA member kept it interesting this past year, incorporating powerhouses like YSL and smaller brands like Sidian Ersatz & Vanes into his eclectic wardrobe. Also, don't be surprised if you see dudes rocking the headband à la Ocean next year.
3. Pharrell
For about 10 years now, Pharrell has been setting trends and leading us into the unknown. Did you think 2012 would be any different? Besides having his hands in too many musical projects for us to even count, Skateboard P brought Mark McNairy on board to develop the Billionaire Boys Club Bee Line, proving that the producer/rapper/author/designer is as in tune now as he was ten years ago.
2. Kanye West
2012 was quite the year for Kanye West, and that's saying something for the man who's dominated the music and style game for years now. In addition to putting out Cruel Summer, the album that was a constant presence no matter where you went, 'Ye also boo'd up the love of his life Kim Kardashian. And he did it all while creating a high-low style that's consistent enough to be signature 'Ye, but also keeps us guessing and talking about whatever it is he'll do next.
1. A$AP Rocky
Without even releasing a proper album in 2012, A$AP Rocky sold out a national tour and made sure anyone looking to out-dress him in 2013 would have a fuckin' problem. Besides usually being dressed in Raf Simons and Rick Owens, Dat Pretty Motherfucker is doing what Kanye and Jay did in 2011 and educating us peons about high-end luxury brands that will undoubtedly soon be the next hot shit. Not to mention Complex's current cover star is homies with Jeremy Scott, Alexander Wang, and Raf Simons. With these friends and his continuously developing style, there ain't no way Rocky's gonna fall off from #1 anytime soon.
