Although we've seen many photographs of the moon, this is the first image of a photograph on the moon. On the Apollo 16 mission on April 23, 1972, astronaut Charlie Duke brought along his family—in the form of a photograph. While roaming the Descartes Highlands with another astronaut John Young, Duke placed a portrait of his family on the surface of the moon and documented the moment with a Hasselblad camera. The artifact still remains where he left it, as Duke, his wife, and his two sons smile in space.
