Earlier today in Atlanta, Colin Kaepernick held his own workout for interested NFL teams after breaking off plans with the league to showcase his skills. From the jump, the NFL's planned workout for Kaepernick seemed a bit off and more like a PR stunt than an actual attempt to get Kap back in the league. Even without the official NFL workout, Kap decided to host his own showcase and threw for a total of six teams at a field outside of Atlanta.
To no real surprise, Kap showed that he can still play. A league exec told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Kap's arm strength was still "elite." In videos posted to social media, Kap could be seen throwing pinpoint deep balls to receivers. He can still play.
While we'll wait to see if a team actually steps up to the plate and signs Kap, the Complex Sports team picked out five NFL teams that need to sign the former 49ers QB right now. And let's be clear, way more than five NFL teams could use Kap right now. There's a lot of mediocre QBs in the league, but we picked five intriguing options at this moment.
Pittsburgh Steelers
We all saw what happened on Thursday night. And no, I'm not talking about Myles Garrett losing his mind and attacking Mason Rudolph. I'm actually talking about Rudolph's production on the field, which was below average at best. Yes, he was without his top RB and WR, but it was clear that Rudolph isn't really positioned to be an NFL QB at this moment. The Steelers still have playoff hopes, so why not take a chance on Colin Kaepernick for the rest of the season? The QB play can't get any worse than it already is.
Chicago Bears
It's no secret that Mitch Trubisky has struggled this season. It's also no secret that the Bears will likely be looking for a new QB next season and someone like Cam Newton could certainly be an option. But why shouldn't the Bears take a look at Kap right now? Go ahead and try and jump start that offense, because Trubisky really ain't it.
Denver Broncos
Denver has been searching for the answer at QB ever since Peyton Manning retired after winning them a Super Bowl. John Elway has failed to find someone through the draft, free agency, and trade, and the Broncos have continued to struggle. There's really no reason why Kap shouldn't get a shot in Denver based on that QB room right now.
Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins entered this season hopeful that Josh Rosen might be the answer at QB going forward. That clearly wasn't the case after he was benched for Ryan Fitzpatrick, who is a serviceable QB, but nobody to put your future into. The Dolphins will be looking to draft a QB high in next year's draft, but there's no reason that they shouldn't give Kap a look for the rest of this season. You're already losing—why not give Kap a chance to prove himself?
New England Patriots
Now, hear me out. We all know Tom Brady is the starter in New England and that isn't changing, but we also know that Bill Belichick will do anything to win. Colin Kaeperick would not only be a solid backup behind Brady as they go for another Super Bowl, but he would give them some special package opportunities on offense that aren't currently there.
