Andrew Bogut Tells Hilarious Story About the Time He Tried to Buy Weed

Steve Kerr had to know he was going to spark some controversy when he let the world in on his use of marijuana to cope with chronic pain Friday. Both his current and former players had opinions about medicinal cannabis usage in the NBA and beyond.

Dallas Mavericks center Andrew Bogut was one of Kerr’s players and gave his stance on the hot button issue when asked before Saturday night’s game against the Chicago Bulls. As usual, the Australian big man has a lot of interesting takes on his former coach’s comments. "I've never really gotten high in my life," he said. "I thought I had some weed as a kid, but I think the guy sold me regular grass."

Bogut's self depreciating sense of humor here shows that he can laugh at himself. Getting finessed aside, it does make for an interesting story.

The former No. 1 overall pick is known for giving candid responses to all of the press’ questions whether his opinions are popular or not. His conversation with ESPN’s Tim McMahon about the NBA possibly allowing the drug for medicinal reasons is sure to raise some eyebrows.

“I’ve never tried it. I don’t know how much it helps, but from what I heard from guys who are retired and have chronic injuries, they say it helps a lot,” Bogut said. “Like I said, you are bringing a big can of worms if you allow it [without restrictions].”

He’s right that any position the league would take will likely be highly legislated to avoid any potential mishaps involving substances. But the 11-year veteran has seen some things in his time around the NBA that prove some of those moments happen already.

The former Ute continued, “You have guys in pro sports playing hungover. You have guys come to practice drunk sometimes. That’s how it is...But as far as it being legal in society, it should be fine to be legal. It’s a plant, it’s an herb, it’s a weed.”
