Cinco De Badass: Our Favorite Mexican Athletes

From high-flying wrestling (word to Nacho Libre) to futbol to golf, Mexicans have left their mark on just about every sport. And, while some prefer to hate on cultures that have given our country so much (eff you, Arizona), we'd rather use holidays such as Cinco de Mayo to recognize what our brothers from across the border have contributed to American society. So, in honor of Mexico's victory over the French, here are our favorite Mexican Athletes.

HOMETOWN: Navojoa

SPORT: Baseball

YEARS ACTIVE: 1980 to 1997

COMPLEX SAYS: What other player do you know who's won a Rookie of the Year, Cy Young Award, and World Series ring in his first two seasons? None. Valenzuela (and his trademark eyes-to-the-heavens delivery) officially set off "Fernandomania" in the early '80s. If you don't know what that is just ask ya moms, son.

HOMETOWN: Sonora

SPORT: Boxing

YEARS ACTIVE: 1981 to 2005

COMPLEX SAYS: The welterweight was a six-time world champion during his career and still has the record for longest undefeated streak in boxing history: 13 years, 11 months, and 24 days. With 86 knockouts in his career, they ain't call him Mr. KO for nothing. Too bad he retired before he could shut Floyd the fuck up.

HOMETOWN: Chula Vista, Calif.

SPORT: Wrestling

YEARS ACTIVE: 1989 to Present

COMPLEX SAYS: OK, so the WWE may not be a real sports league, but shit was entertaining as hell back in the day. Especially when Mysterio brought that Lucha Libra (high flying wrestling on 'roids) aspect to the game. Though the mask and tights are kinda on that Gimp steez, his work in the ring is still badass.

HOMETOWN: Mexico City

SPORT: Soccer

YEARS ACTIVE: 1992 to Present

COMPLEX SAYS: The 37-year-old Mexican living legend has been beasting on the pitch for nearly two decades (currently with Veracruz), tormenting opponents with his ill footwork and classic "archer" celebration.

HOMETOWN: Los Angeles

SPORT: Boxing

YEARS ACTIVE: 1992 to 2008

COMPLEX SAYS: Throughout his career the Golden Boy has won 10 titles in six different weight classes and accumulated the largest PPV draw ever, generating $696 million over the course of his career. Life is still sweet for Oscar, who's now the owner of Golden Boy Promotions...uh, maybe too sweet. We'll pretend those pics never happened, Golden Boy.

HOMETOWN: Chihuahua

SPORT: Basketball

YEARS ACTIVE: 2000 to present

COMPLEX SAYS: Other than being the first Mexican-born NBA draft pick and an all-around good dude, there aren't many highlights in Najera's career. But anyone that tries to snuff Manu Ginobili is cool in our book.

HOMETOWN: Guadalajara

SPORT: Golf

YEARS ACTIVE: 2002 to 2010

COMPLEX SAYS: The first and only Mexican golfer to be ranked number one in the world bowed out on top of the game this month. Rather than show her draining some 15-foot putt, we figured this celebration would be more entertaining. Women in wet shirts, FTW.
