Growing up in New Jersey can be interesting when it comes to supporting sports teams. Depending on what part of the state you grew up in, you might be a fan of New York teams or Philly teams. For example; I grew up in what would be considered "Southern New Jersey," and my grandfather was a diehard Sixers fan. Most of my NFL-loving friends are Eagles fans. Just how it goes.
Karl-Anthony Towns, despite being a center for the Minnesota Timberwolves, grew up in Edison, New Jersey, which by extension means he's an Eagles fan. After the Eagles blew out the Vikings to take the NFC Championship last night, Townes expressed that via Twitter.
Congrats Vikings on a great season as well - much love, Minneapolis! But, I gotta go with the Birds, born and bred a fan #FlyEaglesFly đŠ
"Congrats Vikings on a great season as well," Towns began, "much love, Minneapolis! But, I gotta go with the Birds, born and bred a fan," utilizing the #FlyEaglesFly hashtag. Minnesota fans didn't give a shit, and decided to give Towns the business over this tweet.
bruh you better drop some serious numbers in tonight's game to make up for this betrayal đ
Bad tweet Karl
Extremely tone deaf tweet. Learn how to be a leader from Jimmy. This was not a good move.
Some folks decided this was the opportune time to throw shade at Towns' performance on the court.
Start playing better defense
bruh you better drop some serious numbers in tonight's game to make up for this betrayal đ
You should learn from your Eagles and play some defense.
Sensitive Vikings fans, they donât even watch the games. Heâs been playing good defense for awhiles now. They want to bash Towns simply because he wanted his childhood team to win. Maybe they should root for a different team, go jump on the warriors bandwagon.
There were users who understood why Towns was tweeting this.
So many fans out here hating when all he is doing is rooting for his hometown team. Have to respect that, no need to be childish about it. #AllEyesNorth
So what youâre all saying is that a player shouldnât root for his home team. You canât make a player just forget who they rooted for as a kid.
Surprisingly, Joel Embiid, the Sixers center who recently roasted Towns over Instagram and was rooting for the Eagles himself, didn't have any shots to take at Towns. He's still got time.
