It may have taken a little longer than expected, but Serena Williams has now tied Steffi Graf for the most Grand Slam wins in the Open era.
Following a string of losses to Roberta Vinci in the U.S. Open, Angelique Kerber in the Australian Open, and Garbine Muguruza at the French Open last month, Williams just couldn't seem to capture that elusive 22nd Grand Slam title. However, her coach Patrick Mouratoglou didn't appear concerned at all. "So it's going to take the time it's going to take. But we're going to do it," he told reporters after her loss to Muguruza. "The good thing is we'll have many (chances) because she's in finals almost every time."
With her victory over No. 4 Kerber, 7-5, 6-3, in today's Wimbledon final, Williams captures her seventh trophy in the competition. When the match officially came to an end, Serena was clearly relieved to get one step closer to undoubtedly solidifying herself as the greatest to ever play the sport.
"I had a couple of tries this year, I lost to two great opponents—one of them actually being Angelique," Williams said, after the match. "It makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it."
