Somehow, Lawrence Phillips' current situation may have gone from bad to worse, according to KGET.com's Jason Galvin. Phillips—who is already serving 31 years and four months for assaulting his ex-girlfriend as well as seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon when he hit some teenagers with a car—is now under investigation for murdering his cellmate, Damion Soward, at the Kern Valley State Prison.
Even though Phillips had a number of off-the-field issues during his time at Nebraska, the St. Louis Rams took a chance on him, selecting him with the sixth overall pick in the 1996 NFL Draft. The problems cropped up once again when he entered the league and after one year, he was traded to the Miami Dolphins. His time with the Dolphins came to an end after only two games.
Phillips was given one chance after another, but his off-the-field problems kept surfacing. Now, the 39-year-old is in trouble once again following the death of Soward who was already serving 82 years to life for murder.
