Buffalo Bills cornerback Vontae Davis decided to call it a career during halftime of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. One week after being a healthy scratch in the Bills’ regular season opener, Davis was nowhere to be seen in the second half of their Week 2 contest. "[He] pulled himself out of the game," Bills head coach Sean McDermott said of his player’s unexpected departure, per ESPN. "He communicated to us that he was done." McDermott also confirmed that a medical issue wasn’t behind his disappearance.
"I don't have nothing to say about Vontae," Bills linebacker Lorenzo Alexander said after the game. "I'm going to give him a little bit more respect than he showed us today, as far as quitting on us in the middle of the game."
"I never have seen that. Pop Warner, high school, pros. Never heard of it. Never seen it," Alexander added. "It's just completely disrespectful to his teammates.... He didn't say nothing to nobody. I found out going into the second half of the game. They said he's not coming out, he retired. That's it."
Davis released a statement explaining his decision to abruptly hang up his cleats.
Davis, who signed a one-year deal worth a $2.25 million base salary and a $1.5 million signing bonus with Buffalo in February, has $2 million guaranteed, barring some language in his contract that suggests otherwise.
In related news, the Bills ended up losing to the Chargers, 31-20, to slip to 0-2.
