When Jeff Fisher was fired from the Los Angeles Rams on Monday morning after five straight losing seasons with the team, many rumors swirled about who would take over the coaching reins. One of the most-speculated-about names was Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.
According to ESPN, the rumors made several of his Michigan players really pissed off that Harbaugh, who returned to his alma mater in December 2014 to coach the team and bring them back to prominence in the the FBS ranks, could potentially jump ship back to a coaching gig in the NFL. Senior defensive lineman Ryan Glasgow detailed the team's collective reaction to the rumors Tuesday night at their annual banquet. "The team got all riled up," he explained. "We don't want any enemies infiltrating the fortress. We knew. Based on how much Coach Harbaugh loves the program and loves Michigan, you know he's not leaving anytime soon, if ever."
In a Monday afternoon meeting that Harbaugh described as "short and sweet," he called the rumors "lies made up by our enemies."
Senior captain Jake Butt agreed with his coach's stance. "It's ridiculous," he said. "If I'm not wrong, didn't he take less money to come here? I don't know if it's a recruiting pitch from other schools or whatever is going on. I can't even take it seriously."
Harbaugh's record with the Wolverines stands at 44-19-1. The team finished the season with a 10-2 record, and fell just short of the FBS playoffs after they lost to Ohio State in a double overtime thriller last month.
