If you're an athlete, a coach, or someone else in the sports world and something bad happened to you this week, we've actually got some good news for you: There's a pretty decent chance that 95 percent of America didn't notice whatever it is that happened. Why? Well, just about everyone has been so swept up in all the hysteria surrounding the Super Bowl that they haven't had time to pay attention to every single sports-related story that's come out. In fact, unless a headline had the names Peyton Manning, Richard Sherman, or Marshawn Lynch in it this week, it probably went unnoticed by most people. So if you had a rough week, you can find comfort in the fact that you didn't actually fail in front of the entire sports world.
That being said, we also have some bad news for you: We're about to put the spotlight on you and show the country just how crappy your week was. We apologize in advance for doing it. But at this point, we're so tired of talking about Manning, Sherman, and Lynch—CAN'T THE SUPER BOWL JUST START ALREADY?!—that we're dying to talk about anything except those guys. So here is our list of the 10 Sports People Who Had a Worse Week Than You.
Eli Manning
Date: 1/30/2014
While his older brother Peyton set all kinds of NFL records this season, Eli struggled. And his struggles continued off the field this week when he was sued by a man who alleges that Manning and the Giants created fake "game-worn" football memorabilia in the past and sold it to him. Both Manning and the Giants have called the man's lawsuit "without merit," but the man who filed the suit claims that Manning went along with the plan to create fake memorabilia because he likes to keep his game-worn gear for his own personal collection.
LeBron James
Date: 1/29/2014
Back in May 2011, James referred to a reporter's question as "retarded" during a postgame press conference and was later forced to issue an apology after several advocacy groups spoke out against him. But it doesn't appear as though he learned his lesson. Because prior to a game against the Thunder on Wednesday, James used the word "retarded" again to describe Kevin Durant's passing ability. He apologized for it after the Heat lost to the Thunder. But when is he going to learn that he needs to stop using that word?
Freddie Freeman
Date: 1/28/2014
Like so many people in Atlanta, the Braves first baseman got stranded in tons of traffic when a snowstorm hit the city. Fortunately, his former teammate Chipper Jones jumped on an ATV and rescued Freeman from the storm. But not before he spent lots and lots and lots of time sitting in his car and waiting.
Kobe Bryant
Date: 1/28/2014
When Kobe suffered a fracture in his left knee back in December, he was only supposed to miss about six weeks of action, tops. It looks like he's going to be out until the end of February, though, and that's assuming his knee heals properly. Once that's done, he'll have to get himself back into game shape, work himself back into the Lakers lineup, and try to find a way to help his team get back into the playoff push. But at this point, it's probably too late for him to do anything other than give us a reason to tune into Lakers games again.
Mike D'Antoni
Date: 1/27/2014
Kobe Bryant isn't the only person in the Lakers organization who had a rough week. D'Antoni's week also went down the drain on Tuesday when Magic Johnson made an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and kept it 100 when he was asked about the poor job D'Antoni has done with the Lakers over the course of the last two seasons. "He don't teach defense," Magic said. "I can't stand to watch the Lakers play because the same play happens every single time on the Lakers—pick and roll and the guard goes all the way in for a layup. What are we, 40-something games into the season? The teams run the same play on us. We haven't stopped it yet. Uh, duh." Hey, Magic, why don't you tell us how you really feel?
This Incredibly Intoxicated New York Rangers Fan
Date: 1/29/2014
Did this guy not see all the people with cameras standing in front of him when he decided to urinate on the concourse at Yankee Stadium during the Rangers/Islanders Stadium Series game? Alcohol is a hell of a drug!
Josh Smith
Date: 1/26/2014
This was the worst shot we've seen any NBA player take this season. For that reason and that reason alone, Smith deserves a spot on this list. Do better, dude!
Anthony Bennett
Date: 1/28/2014
The No. 1 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft finally showed some signs of life during a game against the Pelicans, scoring 15 points and grabbing 8 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. And after all his struggles this season, that seemed like a cause for celebration, right? Er, kinda, if you consider the hilarious photo above that poked fun at his 15 points as a "celebration." He also got crossed over and dunked on by J.R. Smith two nights later and, well…yeah. Despite his one good game, times are still tough for this guy.
Matt Hardy
Date: 1/29/2014
On Thursday, TMZ revealed that Hardy and his wife Rebecca were allegedly involved in an all-out brawl with one another at a hotel room in Virginia in early January. The brawl—which prompted a fellow hotel patron to call 911—resulted in both of them getting arrested on assault and battery charges and left both of them bruised and bloody. They've reportedly made up since the incident took place. But the mugshots that they took after the incident were terrifying.
Tiger Woods
Date: 2/2/2014
Woods is off to yet another tough start this season. In fact, it's the worst start of his career. He finished tied for 41st at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic this weekend after finishing in 80th at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines last weekend. It marks the first time in Woods' illustrious career that he's finished outside of the top 20 in the first two tournaments of a season. His next major victory has never seemed further away than it is right now.
