Shannon Eastin has spent the last 16 years of her life working college footballgames in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Today, she serves as a crew chief in the conference. But, on Thursday night, she's set to make history. Because the NFL's regular referees are currently holding out for a better contract, Eastin has been tabbed to work the Packers/Chargers preseason game as one of the league's replacement referees. And, in doing so, she'll become the first female ever to officiate an NFL game.
"I believe I am ready," she said yesterday during a conference call. "I'm a realistic person and I know what is realistic for me. I am not going to play football. I feel it is realistic for me to officiate. I make myself ready for any opportunity that comes my way. I will come in with my eyes wide open."
