As you might recall, Ottawa-based rapper SVDVM went viral in 2017 for “Auston Matthews,” a trap song dedicated to the Toronto Maple Leafs star that actually kinda slapped. “Auston Matthews/ Auston Matthews/ Hit ‘em with the four like Auston Matthews/ BRUP BRUP BRUP BRUP!” went the outbreak-ready hook, referencing the four goals the forward scored in his NHL debut. Fun stuff.

Well, in the wake of the Leafs’ 5-0 clobbering of the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series, SVDVM has returned with another tune dedicated to Papi, “Playoff Anthem (Auston Matthews II).”

The new track flips a sample of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll” for an EDM-inspired affair meant to charge up the Leafs during their post-season run. “Hit ‘em with the four now it’s time for the playoffs,” goes the hook, calling back the original.

“I’ve been getting a lot of requests to make another hockey anthem from my supporters, and I’m a huge fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs,”  SVDVM says of the song. “I love the whole team and for Auston Matthews to be at this level in his career, it’s amazing, so I just had to make another anthem!”

On “Playoff Anthem (Auston Matthews II),” SVDVM makes reference to Matthews “chillin with Bieber, livin’ that rockstar lifestyle,” but also makes sure to shout-out Papi’s line mate. “I let Marner borrow my skrrr/ He shot four then he threw it up/ He don’t miss, just like Matthews,” he spits.

Releasing a steady stream on singles over the last couple years, SVDVM has been helping to put Ottawa’s hip-hop scene on the map. (That’s right, the Leafs are on such a roll even folks in Sens territory can’t deny it.)
