Former NBA Commissioner David Stern Underwent Emergency Surgery for Brain Hemorrhage (UPDATE)

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern has underwent emergency surgery after suffering from a brain hemorrhage, the league said on Thursday.

“NBA Commissioner Emeritus David Stern suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage earlier today for which he underwent emergency surgery,” the NBA said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with David and his family.”

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the 77-year-old "collapsed at the Brasserie 8.5 Restaurant in Manhattan." The New York City Fire Department responded at around 2 p.m. Security guard Victor Tossas-Rivera said that a defibrillator was used but that Stern looked to be unresponsive, CNN reports.

Stern was NBA Commissioner from 1984 to 2014 and helped get the WNBA, which was founded in 1996, off the ground. During his 30 years as NBA Commissioner, Stern oversaw the league's rise into a sports powerhouse. In 2014, Stern was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

So far, there aren't details about Stern's condition.
