Colin Kaepernick hasn't found an NFL home, and it's looking increasingly like his NFL career is over. Teams seem afraid of bringing him aboard, creating a media frenzy, and potentially ostracizing sponsors.
But one of the greatest athletes of all-time thinks that's a mistake. In a new interview with Time, women's tennis G.O.A.T. Serena Williams told Sean Gregory she believes Kaepernick could lead a team to the Super Bowl if given a chance. The reason? He'd be full of determination.
"He'd have so much to prove," Serena explained. "I would. I can't imagine he would be any different. 'Man, I'm about to show out. Y'all gonna see stuff you've never seen before.'"
Kaepernick has raised $1 million for nonprofits, so though he's out of the league, Williams understands why he's still satisfied with his life.
"Colin is happy with what he's doing," she said. "Some people are different. He's just different."
New Oakland Raiders coach Jon Gruden said in March he thought Kaepernick would land on a roster "soon," but that hasn't come to fruition. Kaep and his former teammate Eric Reid, who quickly joined the QB in protesting and also hasn't been signed, are currently suing the league for collusion.
Some of the athletes, like corner Pacman Jones, have suggested it's time for the players to figure out another way to protest, though owners in other leagues—like Steve Ballmer of the Los Angeles Clippers—have said they would support their players if they chose to take a knee. The legend Randy Moss recently criticized the NFL for making its players scared to speak up.
