A used Steph Curry mouthguard is being auctioned off and is expected to sell for at least (at least!) $5,000, ESPN is reporting. California-based auction company SCP Auctions obtained the mouthguard from a fan who picked it up after finding it on the floor near the Warriors' bench after a game this season. They are planning to auction it off beginning Aug. 3 and apparently have high hopes for the mouthguard's value.
"Steph Curry has given more life to mouthguards than any player in history," Dan Imler, SCP Auctions' vice president, told ESPN. "The way he flips it in and out of his mouth has become part of watching him during a game."
Proving the mouthguard indeed belonged to Curry, it is inscribed with the guard's name and number and the Warriors' team logo.
Curry appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last August and said he started wearing a mouthguard after busting open his lip during a college game. "Every year, it's kind of gotten farther and father from my teeth," Curry told Jimmy Kimmel. He said he changes it every 3 to 4 games and called his process very unsanitary.
"I just chew on it like crazy," Curry told Kimmel. "It kind of calms me down, especially when I'm at the free throw line, kind of get in my rhythm."
SCP has sold mouthguards before—and some of them have sold for a ridiculous amount of money. Muhammad Ali's mouthguard from his final bout was auctioned off for $6,700 in 2013.
Sports fans are too much sometimes.
