LeBron James on Cleveland's Roster Changes: 'We Gotta Get a Point Guard'

LeBron wants the Cavs to acquire another point guard to back Irving up, and he hasn’t been shy in expressing his desire for it.

Before LeBron James re-joined the Cleveland Cavaliers, you could make a case that he had never had the luxury of playing with a top-tier point guard. Mario Chalmers and Mo Williams were fine, but not that good.

Nowadays, however, LeBron plays with undoubtedly one of the two or three best point guards in the NBA—a guy whom many consider the very best—Kyrie Irving. With that in mind, LeBron wants the Cavs to acquire another point guard to back Irving up, and he hasn’t been shy in expressing his desire for it.

“We still got a couple more things we need to do,” James said Friday, according to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com. “We gotta get a point guard. It’s my last time saying it. We need a point guard.”

James was commenting on the Cavs’ acquisition of Kyle Korver from the Atlanta Hawks.

While it was a great pickup—imagine how much Korver’s ability to stretch the defense will add to Cleveland’s already-dominant offensive attack—LeBron still felt the team had more to do.

Coach Tyronn Lue agreed with LeBron, whom many joke holds the power of Cleveland’s General Manager.

“I’m pretty sure that we will,” Lue said. “Like I said, I’ve always been confident in [David Griffin] that he gets something done. We don’t want to just make a decision where we just bring in a backup point guard that doesn’t fit our style or fit who we are as a team and our culture. So, for me, it’s about getting the right piece and the right player.”

The Cavs have needed a backup floor general since Matthew Dellavedova joined the Bucks in free agency. So, which players might they look at?

According to another report from Vardon, Rajon Rondo and Chalmers are on the Cavs’ radar.
