UPDATED 12/2/19, 10:26 a.m.: The midseason tournament concept is currently in the discussion phase, according to the New York Times. Decision-makers are currently considering incentives, including a possible extra round pick for the winner and bonuses for players and coaches who do well.

All elements of the NBA's potential midseason tournament remain in the discussion phase, but one idea proposed to incentivize teams to embrace the new competition is furnishing the tournament winner with an extra draft pick, league sources say
Any such measure would have to be ratified by league vote, but the league’s search is on for ways -- on top of bonus compensation for players and coaches who do well in the tournament -- to make teams eager to participate. A first-round pick would certainly help

With the 2019-20 NBA season underway, the NBA is reportedly engaged in discussion to dramatically overhaul the league's calender year. As ESPN reports, the NBA has been talking with the National Basketball Players Association and broadcast partners about the potential changes.

The discussions are ongoing with a plan to bring a vote for the changes at the April meeting of NBA's Board of Governors. Some or even all of these proposals could come into effect with the 75th anniversary season in 2021-22. Changes being discussed include a 30-team in-season tournament, a postseason play-in, and reseeding the four conference finalists. Additionally, it has been suggested if these changes come into effect the regular season could be shortened to 78 games from the usual 82.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has expressed interest in an in-season tournament in the past. Due to the suggested shorter season, the tournament would benefit players that might otherwise take a financial hit by playing less games. Modeled after similar European soccer tournaments, the in-season tourney would compensate the winning team's players and coaches.

The NBA will not be able to put any of these changes into effect until the NBPA comes to agreement. Silver and NBPA executive director Michele Roberts have reportedly been leading these discussions.
