Every four years, Michael Phelps becomes an A-lister, and with that prestigious status comes a boatload of over the top—and frequently invasive—media coverage. Perhaps because of that, the greatest swimmer in
U.S. world history opted to secretly marry his longtime girlfriend, former Miss California USA Nicole Johnson, in Arizona back in June. And he has somehow managed to keep it a secret ever since.
According to the Associated Press, Phelps and Johnson had a private ceremony on June 13, roughly a month after the couple had their first son, Boomer. On that date, Johnson posted a photo of the family standing by a pool—which is appropriate, we guess—and dressed extremely casually, with a caption that said "Such a memorable night with my lil fambam":
Furthermore, The Arizona Republic put up a copy of the couple's marriage license and also noted that the ceremony was officiated by Phelps' agent Peter Carlisle, which is probably part of the reason the couple was able to keep their secret for so long. Johnson spent the entirety of the 2016 Rio Olympics being referred to as Phelps' "fiancée" by NBC's broadcasting team.
Anyway, it has obviously been a very good year. In addition to tying the knot, he also won six medals—five of which were gold—at the 2016 Olympics and managed to do so without igniting an international incident. Congrats to the happy couple.
