Well that didn't take long. After opting out his contract with adidas back in February, Portland Trailblazers point guard Damian Lillard was set to become the most enticing free agent on the signature sneaker market. However, today the All-Star guard and adidas announced a long-term extension, keeping the former Rookie of the Year Award winner with the three stripes brand.

“adidas has been great to me over my first two seasons,” said Lillard. “I’ve had the opportunity to wear a lot of great product, help design special versions of shoes, be a part of TV commercials and travel the world with the brand. I’m excited for what the future holds for me and adidas.”

Lillard's impressive resume in his relatively young NBA career makes him one of the most attractive athlete endorsement options in sports today. This past season, Lillard increased his stardom when he became the first NBA player to compete in all five events at NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans. By locking him up long-term, adidas dodged the likely possibility of a high-priced bidding war for Lillard this summer.

“Damian has proven to be not only an amazing basketball player, but a great partner, member of the community and someone who creates excitement for our products,” said Chris Grancio, adidas head of global basketball sports marketing. “His leadership and commitment to success on the court and his ability to interact and relate to fans through social media and the community make him the perfect fit to be one of the cornerstones of the adidas brand.”
