Following up news of Nike attempting to trademark the word "Footware" to brand its line of futuristic, software-infused footwear designs, the Swoosh filed for another trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on April 19 that hints at more of the brand's future plans.
The latest filing is for the word "Cryptokicks," which indicates that Nike will be making an attempt to create its own cryptocurrency. The application submitted by Nike states that it will be for, "financial services, namely, providing a digital currency or digital token for use by members of an online community." It also indicates the creation of "downloadable mobile applications for providing access to crypto collectibles, crypto art, and application tokens." Cryptokicks could potentially be used to purchases goods on Nike's apps and online store.
Trademark attorney Josh Gerben spoke about the filing on Twitter saying that it was filed on a "1B" basis. This means that Nike has the intent to use the Cryptokicks trademark in the near future. If approved, Nike will have to launch a commercial product under the moniker within the next four years to retain the rights to it.
Nike has not responded to Sole Collector's request for comment at this time.
