Yes, the Nike Air MAG is the shoe most will think of if you say "Back to the Future sneakers," but don't forget about the Nike Bruin that Michael J. Fox wore as Marty McFly in the first film in the trilogy.
According to a new piece by Russ Bengtson at movie news site Collider, Fox just happened to be wearing the sneakers when he arrived on-set. The movie's costume designer forgot to bring a pair of shoes for Fox, but they stuck with the Bruins since director Robert Zemeckis approved. They did make an alteration though – the Nike branding was removed from the tongues and the heels, hence the similar approach on today's retro Nike Bruin for Back to the Future Day.
A piece at the Wall Street Journal supports the story, and screenwriter/producer Bob Gale says the film's executive producer even called Nike to have pairs of Bruins made for Fox.
Things will come full circle later this evening with this infamous Nike Bruin, as it will be Fox's footwear of choice for his appearance tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
