The "Memphis Express" Nike Zoom Rookie was designed as a tribute to Penny Hardaway's Tournament of the Stars hoop team that competes in the non-profit organization's annual tournament. When going over details with designer Marc Dolce, Penny expressed his desire to have a shoe that matched the red-based Memphis Express uniforms and somewhat reflected the candy apple paint finish you'd see on a classic car. Dolce and company obliged and the result was the "Memphis Express" Rookie.
