At 14 years old, Chase Swearingen is nicknamed "The Captain" because he's a "take charge kind of guy." Since birth, Swearingen has been treated for hydrocephalus, which causes dangerous accumulation of fluid around the brain.
With plans to pursue a doctorate in neuropsychology, Swearingen designed his Doernbecher Nike Air Max Zero with the same attention to detail that he gives everything else in life. Tubing running all the way to the sockliner represents the shunt he's had his entire life. His passion for lighthouses is evident on the heel, down to using the Nike Swoosh as the light beam. The tongue reads "Unstoppable Chase."
Swearingen's Doernbecher Nike Air Max Zero releases Saturday, Dec. 17 for $150.
