Following the Air Jordan XX3 release, the Jordan Brand transitioned away from the Roman numeral system, beginning a series of game shoes named after the years in which they were released. The visionary for the Air Jordan 2009 was Senior Footwear Designer Jason Mayden.

Celebrating Michael Jordan's defensive prowess, Mayden drew inspiration for the design fro the sport of fencing. Additional inspiration comes from the Air Jordan I and the use of panache leather reflects the Air Jordan XI.

The 2009 was also the second Air Jordan game shoe to utilize Nike's Considered construction process, focused on the use of low waste, water-based solvent materials that don't harm the environment.

Pleated satin on the upper enhanced durability while providing ventilation and a lockdown fit. The design contours the foot for responsiveness and support. A Phylon midsole offers impact protection and Zoom Air in the forefoot was implemented for cushioning. Articulated Propulsion Technology returned for quick lateral movements and full control.

The 2009 was originally launched in White/Metallic Silver and Black/Varsity Red. A limited Black/Metallic Gold 'S23' would later be released, as well a special colorway celebrating MJ's induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Player Exclusive colorways of the 2009 were worn by Ray Allen, Chris Paul, Joe Johnson and the North Carolina Tar Heels.

For Day 24 of the XX8 Days of Flight, the Jordan Brand offers a look at the 2009 in black and neon green.
