The actress and daytime TV host shared some throwback photos of her and the Spider-Man: No Way Home star to Instagram on Saturday, reflecting on their first time meeting back in 2011. As Barrymore remembers, she was “so captivated” by the then-teenage actor.
“I had just watched your movie and we were meeting about a project I was going to direct and I truly thought you were the most impressive and incredible person as well as such an extraordinary talent! But! Watching you grow up! Fall in love with the greatest woman [Zendaya] and become our hero! From Spider-Man to the greatest dancer in a Billy Elliot and [Lip Sync Battle]. And now you will play Fred Astaire hopefully ??? There is nothing you can’t and won’t do! I remember this moment.”
Barrymore’s moment of reflection wasn’t out of the blue, either, as she noted that she spotted the photo on a Tom Holland update account, which ultimately reminded her of their early meeting.
“It was like every time I see you, I remember this moment and now i have record of it too,” Barrymore shared. “I send you and your lady the very best! As always, i am cheering you on!!!!!!”
As for some more recent Tom developments, No Way Home director Jon Watts just spoke with Variety and explained that he sat down with Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield before they filmed their first scene together. He appropriately called the meeting a “a Spider-Man therapy session,” and by the sound of it, that’s exactly how it went for the three franchise superstars before they filmed “a once-in-a-lifetime event.”
“We sat on folding chairs in a circle and went through the script together,” he recalled. “I had talked to everyone separately, but to have everyone together to talk about the story, how the pieces fit together and what Spider-Man meant to them — that was exciting for me.”
