Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is having quite the moment in Hollywood, so it’s generous of him to produce and give a spotlight to this homegrown New Zealand comedy. The Breaker Upperers is a quirky romantic comedy written by, directed by, and starring New Zealand comedic actors Madeleine Sami and Jackie Van Beek, about two cynical women who start an agency that helps break couples up. The result is a delightfully offbeat comedy that’s reminiscent of the best of Waititi’s work, such as What We Do In The Shadows (in which Van Beek also stars), but clearly showcases Sami’s and Van Beek’s own sense of humor and heart. The Breaker Upperers is a charming indie comedy that shouldn’t be overlooked.
