Where You Can Cop the Best Looks in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

With 21 hit films (and counting!) under their belt, Marvel Studios continues to boast one of Hollywood’s most consistent track records, spending the past 10 years transforming some of our most beloved comic book characters into worldwide silver screen sensations. One thing we’ve learned in the intervening decade is that, when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not all heroes wear capes: the franchise has benefited greatly from teaming up with the industry’s most talented and creative costume designers, whose behind-the-scenes work is vital to the character--and world-building--we have come to love about Marvel films.

In honor of the release of Avengers: Endgame, we’ve traversed Asgard, the Astral plane, and beyond to identify the best style moments in each of Marvel’s films and offer up our favorite real-world equivalents. After all, you might not have a magic hammer or impenetrable shield, but you can still incorporate superheroics into your style. Here’s how.

One of our earliest and most impressionable introductions to Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) is also one of Marvel’s most memorable. During his Jericho missile presentation, Stark wears an over the top, bold, and brazen pinstripe suit that’s just as flashy as he is. Of course, we’ll soon see him trade a cloth suit for an iron one, but as our first experience with the character, this suit helps to really set the tenor and tone of Tony’s journey--one that continues to grow and change almost ten years later. Considering the fact that Bruce Banner (played here by Ed Norton) goes through clothes like most of America goes through coffee cups, he’s probably not super concerned about spending tremendous amounts of money on clothing. While Iron Man 2 gets dinged for being one of the lesser entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s generally agreed upon that Sam Rockwell was one of the best aspects of it. His character of Justin Hammer is essentially “What if Tony Stark, but too much?” so the fact that Rockwell’s character wearing a showy three-piece suit (therefore taking it up a notch from the standard suits Tony wears) makes total sense--and helps to further flesh out the overzealousness of the character. Dressing in a great piece of Americana—like this workwear jacket—is perfect for a Thor (Chris Hemsworth) that’s just experiencing Earth for the first time. It’s a rugged and functional choice as much it’s a stylish one, making the God of Thunder blend in as well as he possibly can (you know, aside from smashing diner coffee mugs) in a small town. As for the real world take, Carhartt has been a workwear staple for years, so why not just stick with one of the greats?

While Steve Rogers’ best friend might not get all the honor and glory that Captain America gets, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) does get a killer quilted jacket that will come in handy if you need to stay warm in a sniper’s nest. And like most of Marvel’s costume design, it’s a smart real-world interpretation of a traditionally silly comic costume. The quilted jacket from Filson doesn’t have all the same bells and whistles as Bucky’s does, but it’ll keep you nice and warm all the same.

Steve Rogers might be a man out of time, but even in the modern era he knows that some articles of clothing are just timeless. This vintage style leather jacket harkens back to his 1940s roots, but has a modern cut—balancing the best of both worlds—fitting, as Captain America leaves the Avengers fully ready to embrace the modern world. Ralph Lauren’s take on a leather jacket keeps a timeless silhouette, but gives it a color that feels decidedly vintage--so it’s basically just like Cap.

Iron Man 3 is the best Iron Man movie for a variety of reasons (it’s a Shane Black-directed movie, it’s a Christmas movie, there’s a great and not annoying kid sidekick, and it deals with Tony’s post-Avengers PTSD in a really satisfying way), but chief among them is that sees both Tony Stark and Rhodey (Don Cheadle) out of their respective armors for considerable amounts of the film. Rhodey wears a few Fred Perry polo shirts throughout, but this minty green one is our favorite and is as memorable as the armor-filled third act.

Anyone knows that if you’re going to be stuck inside all day (or in Loki’s case at the start of Thor: The Dark World, stuck in the Asgardian prison cell) that comfortable clothes are key to making that experience semi-tolerable. Here, the God of Mischief’s shirt definitely looks comfy, even if he’s not. It’s hard to tell the actual material here, but it certainly looks to be quite similar to that of a standard sleep shirt; this one from Desmond & Dempsey is a quality purchase to wear when you’re just kicking it around your home.

As we noted before, Steve Rogers loves a good jacket, and this bomber from Captain America: The Winter Soldier seemingly has a more functional and sporty feel to it; it’s a jacket that’s certainly befitting of a film that sees Cap on the lam for large portions of its run time. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is essentially introduced to us as a space version of Han Solo meets Indiana Jones, so it makes sense that Star-Lord would need some sort jacket worth of those cinematic icons. And while he wears several different leather jackets throughout the film, this is our favorite; it keeps Peter grounded in reality, while still managing to look out of this world. Finding a red leather jacket as cool as this one might actually require a trip to outer space, but Schott NYC has one that’s definitely Quill inspired.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, we learn that Thor has spent a fair amount of time living on Earth, so the God of Thunder has ditched his armor for some good menswear. The standout is a beautiful coat we see him wearing during the party just before Ultron shows up for the first time; it’s a statement piece that merges his regal Asgardian heritage (that burgundy color screams loyalty) with his admiration for Earth. Designer Paul Smith’s wool and cashmere-blend coat is quite similar in hue, and its luxe fabrics are sure to have you feeling like a god as well.

Everyone knows that a black hoodie is a must for pulling off a good heist. Scott Lang’s version looks nice and warm for those nights when staking out a target turns cold, but still looks lightweight enough to not hold him back if he has to make a run for it. In an homage to one of the great comic book panels of all time, Vision’s off-duty look sees the android trade in his robotic body for a cool and slick sweater. We see in Doctor Strange that Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) has assembled what seems to be one of the most expensive watch collections ever put on film, but the crown jewel is his Jaeger-LeCoultre watch (fitting, since Strange spends most of the film bargaining and wishing for more time). We know that jumpsuits aren’t for everyone (it certainly didn’t make Baby Groot too happy), but if there’s one thing that this Ravager garb does for the little twig, it’s that it makes him look like the badass that we know he is. If you’re not afraid of a little sartorial risk, wearing a jumpsuit is one easy way to stand out. What’s fun about the Vulture’s jacket is that it’s another great, modern reimagining of a classic costume that works for the real-life universe Marvel Studios has created. Having a giant green leotard would look silly--but a bomber jacket with faux fur to keep Adrian Toomes warm as he flies around stealing old tech from Tony Stark? It’s just a perfect touch that’s functional and just cool looking. Fur--even faux fur--is getting harder to find on jackets nowadays, but Ralph Lauren’s RRL brand has a shearling leather bomber that’s definitely in the same spirit as what’s captured here.

While this specific shirt is actually the cover art to Duran Duran’s Rio, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner proves that a statement graphic tee shirt looks good under pretty much anything you layer underneath it. Graphic tees are pretty much a dime a dozen these days, but this one from Folk has a certain flair to it that will look great when layered or on its own. Just try not to Hulk out when you’re wearing it, yeah?

From the moment the first trailer for Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther dropped, there was an instant fervor around the truly luxurious shearling jacket that Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger was seen wearing in that initial spot. Flashforward to now and I’m fully convinced that this jacket started the bandwagon for costume designer Ruth E. Carter’s eventual Academy Award win for the costumes in this movie, as even the designer herself said that there’s something about the piece that “ . . . speaks to pop culture, [it] speaks to American culture.”

The jacket itself is now as iconic as Jordan’s performance itself and might single-handedly be the most iconic fashion moment in the MCU . . . which means you’ve gotta have one for yourself. We like Levi’s take on the jacket, as the brand itself is as much an American institution as Black Panther has now become.

The stakes in Avengers: Infinity War were arguably the highest we’ve seen in the MCU thus far, so leave it to Tony Stark to invent a way to get into his armor even faster than before with his new nanotech Iron Man suit, which wraps around his totally custom-designed athleisure. It also fits with Tony perfectly because once you’re in a certain income bracket, you can pretty much wear whatever you want, including when getting ready to go to work against Thanos and his Black Order. While we don’t advise wearing an Adidas tracksuit into the majority of offices in corporate America, that doesn’t mean you can wear one when you’re relaxing on the weekend.

Scott Lang’s house arrest after the events of Captain America: Civil War lead our hero to channel some major Lebowski vibes, but the fact he spends a portion of the film running around in a robe with Hope (Evangeline Lilly) and Hank (Michael Douglas) takes that causal vibe to a whole new level. LL Bean offers a flannel robe that’s nearly identical in pattern and is sure to keep just as comfy as Scott.

Considering its '90s setting, a bit of grunge is certainly apt for Captain Marvel—but we really love Carol’s Nine Inch Nails tee shirt, mostly because band tees never go out of style and NIN continues to captivate fans. Any cool band tee will work, but if you want the exact NIN version, you won’t need to travel back in time to get it.
