Though the likelihood of another season of True Detective seemed preposterously low during the hangover caused by 2015's bizarrely undercooked sophomore run, we have now moved beyond such despair. The HBO drama is definitely coming back, with creator Nic Pizzolatto again writing nearly every episode, and this time it counts Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff as its stars. Wednesday, the good news continued with the announcement of multiple cast members.
Justice League's Ray Fisher has joined as a series regular, Deadlinereported Wednesday. The Purge's Rhys Wakefield has also been added in a recurring capacity alongside Jon Tenney (Major Crimes) and Michael Greyeyes (Fear the Walking Dead).
Other previously confirmed True Detective season 3 stars include Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer, and Carmen Ejogo. Fisher has been cast as the son of Ali's character, an Arkansas-based detective named Wayne Hays. As far as plot, we know that this season will center on a "macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks" and is set to span three different time periods.
When announcing the new arc back in August, Pizzolatto said he was "tremendously thrilled" to work with Ali. "I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we're all very excited to tell this story," he said. Jeremy Saulnier, whose 2016 film Green Room is a must-see, will be directing. Pizzolatto will also make his directorial debut this season.
A specific release date has not been set, but we should probably expect new True Detective episodes to start rolling out in 2019.
