The 10 Best Free Games For The Droid

The Droid is a beast. Fans of it will live by it and denounce the Blackberry and iPhone all day long. But how are its free games? Sure, there are a lot of exclusive, for PAY games on the Droid, but which games come out on top when it comes to not paying a dirty dime for ‘em? Good question. So here are our top ten.

Ok, let’s start this list off with a classic. Chess Free lets you play your favorite game of the mind against either the brutal AI - though, you can tinker with its difficulty to make it duh, dumb, or Bobby Fischer bright - or a friend. The interface is easy and, well, it’s chess. But it’s free. What could be better?

Bored of Bejeweled? Try Bebbled. It’s a similar game in that you shift pieces around, but the gameplay stressed strategy in that you’re only given a certain number of moves. What makes this game so much fun is the combo system, which is always prevalent in these “get rid of the blocks” kind of games. There’s little more satisfying than seeing your objective line shoot up after a huge combo. Nothing tops it. Especially not Bejeweled.

What we like about this game is that it FORCES you to play against others. Your objective is to line up balls and knock your opponent into a hole in the center as explosions go off when you bump into them. Sounds simple, right? And it is. But it’s also extremely addictive. We actually had a hard time putting it down to write this article. Yep, just like that.

Remember all those Theme Park games where you are tasked with building your own attractions for which people will give you loot? Well, this is one of those. But instead of a theme park, you’re basically constructing a resort. Although the learning curve is slightly higher than the preceding games mentioned, it’s hard to put down once you get building. Lay off the hot dog stands, man.

There’s also a pay version of this Tower Defense game, but you don’t need it. You can get your rocks off with the free version, which features one map with different difficulty settings. Basically, the point of this game is to plant down different robots to stop the enemies from getting into your base. Simple, fun, and a time waster. You’ll like it.

Timing. To be a ninja, you need timing and rhythm. And that’s what you get with this strangely addictive game. Taking on the role of a tiny ninja and running up and down hills, this game is all about building momentum and flinging yourself up high into the sky to beat the eclipse of the moon. This is another one that might take a little longer to get the hang of, but once you do, phew, time waster to the extreme.

We were going to choose Wordfeud, but we chose this one instead because we know more people are keen on it. Either one will suffice, though. They’re both cross-platform games that are a nice, quick diversion. The two are like an extreme version of Scrabble, with the ability to play multiple people at once…and, thus, getting your ass handed to you by multiple people at once. Watch out for those double and triple word scores. They’ll bite you in the ass if you’re not careful.

Brought to you by the same folks who brought you Moon Chaser, iRunner lets you pilot an, er, running candle (we think) who picks up batteries and presents to get through the stages. You jump, double jump and slide your way through the levels as they progressively get harder and faster. Oh, and for reasons we have no idea about, you can don a Batman costume when you collect enough presents. Like we said: it’s awesome.

UNLIKE the iPhone version, Angry Birds is actually FREE on the Droid (eat it, Apple!), and it’s just as fun as you’ve heard it is. Projectile shooting your assortment of birds in order to knock down pigs is the M.O., and there’s a reason why this game is on t-shirts and has become such a phenomenon. Seriously, it’s that good. How are you NOT playing it right now?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we love Angry Birds just like the next person, but we REALLY have a soft spot for Bust-a-Move, and this game is pretty much just that. Instead of aiming with a crane, you aim with your finger to clear the stages. Angry Birds might have more replay value, but we seriously can’t put this game down. In fact, we want to play it right now. Thankfully, this was our number one pick, so now that we’re done with the article, we have time to play. Back to FBP for us.
