[Comic-Con] 5 Things We Loved, and 5 Things We Hated

Welcome to NY Comic-Con, where the lines are staggering, the people are dressed up in popular and obscure references to comic book and other characters, and the smell can sometimes be overwhelming.

From the safety of your desk, bed, or whatever else you're reading this on, check out what we loved and hated about the video game world/industry portrayed at this year's NY Comic-Con.

Loved: The Arkham City Panel

Critic and consultant, N’Gai Croal, led a great panel featuring the voice of Batman, people at Rocksteady, and also Claudio Sanchez from the band Coheed and Cambria, who did songs for the soundtrack. The fans gushed, the screenshots were awesome, and everybody rejoiced. It was amazing. Can’t wait for the game to come out. 

Loved: The variety of video game costumes

As you’ll see in our pics of costumes from the show, a lot of obscure video game characters got some love this year. From Chrono in Chrono Trigger to Cut Man. It was seriously the Naz.

Loved: Turtle Beach Headsets

We still can’t get over just how loud and pulse-pounding these headsets make games like CoD and Rag feel. It really puts you even deeper into the action, which is a very scary thing given the setting, but radical none the less. 

Loved: Swag

More so than even in year’s past, exhibits seemed to be ESPECIALLY giving this year, with Capcom being the most giving. Oh, and speaking of Capcom...

Loved: Capcom

No doubt about it. As far as video games are concerned, Capcom owned this year. From their excellent panels, to their football game, to their tournaments and just overall presence on the show floor, no company was better, or garnered more respect from its fans. They were great.

Hated: The Avengers booth

There was a huge presence of the Avengers at the show, but it sucked. They had this huge section where people would shout from a stage and people would clap, but nothing looked like it was going on. It just created more floor traffic. What a mess. 

Hated: The Lack of variety in the costumes

Sure, seeing Phoenix Wright was cool, but for every Phoenix Wright, there were like 50 Deadpools. When you see more people dressed up as Deadpool than you do Batman, you know something’s off. We love the Merc with the mouth and all, but please, don’t go overboard with the costume next year.

Hated: The Lines

Yes, we mentioned this already, but we have to mention this again. The mismanagement of some of these panels and events was staggering. We couldn’t get into a lot of different things just because there was no space, and waiting on line for four hours wasn’t an option. The worst part is, is that this is a problem that we can’t see ever getting fixed. It practically ruins Comic-Con. Nothing could be worse.

Hated: Nintendo

Except for Nintendo’s showing at the con. The line for Skyward Sword was too long, the DS’s were position in a weird, circular way so that you were always stepping on somebody’s foot, and again, Super Mario Land 3DS doesn’t look so hot. All of us at the office are HUGE Nintendo fanboys and girls, but Nintendo let us down this year. We hope they can pick up the slack in 2012.
