According to The New York Times, the United States Census Bureau puts New York's population at 8.4 million as of July 1, 2013—the highest number in history. The newspaper also talked to the director of the population division for the Department of City Planning, Joseph J. Salvo, who said that the Big Apple's population has swelled by as much as 2.8 percent since 2010.
