Grimes and Elon Musk renamed their one-year-old daughter last week to “Y.”

On Mar. 23, Grimes tweeted a pair of photos: one of her daughter and one of herself, both wearing matching red outfits.

When one user replied to the tweet greeting the baby with “omg baby sailor mars hiiii,” Grimes let the account know she had changed her daughter’s name.

“She’s Y now, or ‘Why’ or just ‘?’ (But the government won’t recognize that),” Grimes wrote. “Curiosity, the eternal question, and such.”

@grimesfeed She's Y now, or "Why?" or just "?" (But the government won't recognize that). curiosity, the eternal question, .. and such.

The name change comes after Grimes and Musk originally named her Exa Dark Sideræl Musk when she was born in Dec. 2021. Though Y was her official nickname back then, Grimes confirmed she would be solely known as Y moving forward.

Grimes and Musk have a history of changing their kids’ names after the birth of their first child. The pair named the child X Æ A-12 but had to change it to X Æ A-Xii following a violation of California’s naming laws. Officially, the child’s first name is X, contrasting their daughter’s name Y.
