One of the more surprising announcements to come from this year's Sundance Film Festival was that HBO purchased A24's Native Son, a reimagining of Richard Wright's 1940 book. Visual artist Rashid Johnson was at the helm for his first film, and it stars Ashton Sanders (of Moonlight fame), as well as Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), David Alan Grier, Sanaa Lathan, and many more.

Today, HBO announced that the film would premiere on April 6. They also released the above teaser, as well as some select still images from the feature.

Sanders, as Bigger Thomas, takes a job in modern Chicago as a chauffeur for a wealthy businessman. The film is a coming of age tale, but find Bigger having to come to terms with himself, where he came from, and the intoxicating new world he's frequenting...all while hiding something.

Early talk is that Sanders is a gem in the film, which is being called "visually striking." You get the sense of that in the teaser. Check that out now, as well as the stills down below, and mark your calenders for Native Son's April 6 premiere.
