When: Friday, April 21

Where: In theaters

At its core, Beau is Afraid is literally a story about a man who lives in a constant state of fear. He struggles with anxiety and paranoia and even stepping foot outside of his apartment feels like he’s going into a war zone. It’s hard to tell if the world outside is truly as scary and terrifying as it is depicted on the screen or if what the audience sees is simply a result of this heightened version of reality that Beau experiences in his day to day. The unhoused people in his neighborhood are portrayed as criminals and zombie-like figures who start off the movie terrorizing him at every turn before he embarks on an epic journey to try to get home on the anniversary of his father’s death to be with his mother, who is just as terrifying in her controlling nature as zombies would be.

The film is written and directed by Ari Aster, so fans of his past work should have some idea of what’s in store when they sign up for the three-hour journey. Some people have walked out half-way into the film, others have protested as soon as the credits rolled in, while others have absolutely loved it. Either way, this is your journey to experience, so good luck. If you aren’t faint of heart and don’t scare easily, see it in IMAX.

'Ghosted'

When: Friday, April 21

Where: Apple TV+

Ghosted might look like a rom-com but it’s more than that. The movie is an action-packed second date between Cole (Chris Evans) and Sadie (Ana De Armas), and it’s not that kind of action—but the explosion, guns, and running away from the bad guys kind. Cole met Sadie randomly and quickly falls in love with her, but their romance comes to a halt when he stops hearing from her. He makes a trip to London to go after her as a grand romantic gesture that usually lands the girl in love stories like these, but then he finds out she’s really a secret agent. Now he’s involved in her latest adventure, and as these stories go, they most likely fall in love along the way. De Armas and Evans previously worked together on The Gray Man so the established familiarity between them helps them in this film. Check it out on Apple TV+ if you’re in the mood for a bit of love and excitement.

'Chevalier'

When: Friday, April 21

Where: In theaters

Chevalier is a film inspired by the true story of French composer Joseph Bologne, who was known in France as the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, and is played by Kelvin Harrison Jr. He was widely considered to be one of the most accomplished musicians and men in Europe with multiple talents including being a prolific violinist and fencer, which led him to be known as the “Black Mozart.” Bologne was the illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner and fights his way to the top of French society including a love affair with Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton). There’s plenty of drama, music, and a top-notch performance from Harrison that make this one worth watching.

When: Wednesday, April 19

Where: FX and Hulu

We’ve come to the end of the road with Franklin Saint. After six seasons, Snowfall took its final bow with Damson Idris delivering one of his most powerful performances to date. His character finds himself at rock bottom. After climbing the ranks and building a drug empire with his closest friends and family, the rug has been swiftly pulled from under him, leaving him alone, penniless, and hopeless. A series of unfortunate events have undone all of the work and sacrifices Franklin made to build his business and now he was left with nothing, back in the streets of Compton and on the same boat as the people he peddled drugs to and fueled his fortune. What comes around goes around, and the show has depicted the downside to living a life of crime. From having $70 million at his fingertips, to having no money or anything to his name, Franklin is an example of how living wrong has its consequences. And that there are darker endings than death.
