Charlotte's mayor was arrested on federal corruption charges today, authorities say.

The Charlotte Observer reports that Mayor Patrick Cannon was charged with theft and bribery after allegedly receiving tens of thousands of dollars. He was arrested during a sting operation by the FBI, which involved agents posing as potential investors. The Observer adds that this included a briefcase containing $20,000 that was delivered to his office in February, the same office where he reportedly solicited upwards of $1 million.

Cannon, 47, reportedly promised to assist undercover agents with parking, zoning and more in return for money, lavish hotel rooms, extravagant trips and a luxury apartment.

The mayor was released on $25,000 unsecured bond, and could be indicted as early as next week. Cannon, the longest-tenured official in the city, will remain mayor until he's convicted or steps down. The Observer adds that he's the highest-ranking official in the area to be hit with corruption charges since former state House Speaker Jim Black pleaded guilty back in 2007.

He could face up to 50 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines if convicted.
