The mutants are back, and if yesterday’s box office result is any indication, X-Men: Days of Future Past is on its way to a huge Memorial Day weekend. According to Deadline, the time-traveling comic book sequel earned an estimated $ 35.7 million on Friday, and it should earn more than $100 million for the extended four-day weekend. Depending on how big of a drop X-Men sustains from Friday through Sunday, it could also surpass Captain America: The Winter Soldier for the biggest three-day weekend total of the year.
With a four-day accumulation estimated to be anywhere from $110-$120 million, Days of Future Past has cemented itself as a fresh new start for the franchise, although it could still fall below the opening weekend of 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. Still, this big opening weekend was vital for Fox, especially considering another sequel is in development for 2016, titled X-Men: Apocalypse.
We’ll have full box office results for Days of Future Past when they get released later this weekend.
