Disney has been controlling the block as of late. In addition to Marvel, Disney also acquired 21st Century Fox in March of this year. This merger has led The Simpsons' creator Matt Groening to believe that the Mouse will be looking for a return on his investment. This means another Simpsons movie could be happening soon.

"No doubt there will be another Simpsons movie one of these days," Groening said during this year's San Deigo Comic-Con. "I think Disney wants something for its money."

Not that Disney is hurting for cash, but adding another Simpsons movie to the additional superhero series they now own following the merger will definitely help to their pockets. When The Simpsons Movie opened in 2007, the film turned a major profit at the box office. After spending $75 million to produce, the movie generated $527.1 million in sales. While most companies would try to immediately cash in on this hype by turning out another movie, Groening explains how the infrastructure at Fox hindered them from producing a sequel.

"This is a true answer. The first Simpsons Movie almost killed us," Groening admitted. "We didn’t have a B-team waiting to do The Simpsons Movie, so the same people who wrote, animated, voiced and did the music for The Simpsons TV show also did the movie. That was in 2007. We’re almost recovered, almost."

This is not the first time the idea of a The Simpsons Movie 2 has been tossed around. In 2018, Movieweb reported that Fox was starting production on a sequel. Yet, once the merger was announced, fans were worried that Disney would stop these talks. But for Disney, if it makes dollars, then it makes sense, meaning that another profitable Simpsons film is bound to hit the silver screen.
