It looks like fans will have to wait a while to see Jason Momoa reprise his role in Aquaman 2.

On Wednesday, March 6, it was reported that the second installment in the adventures of Arthur Curry is not scheduled to hit theaters until Dec. 16, 2022. However, audiences will not have to wait that long to dive back into the world of Atlantis. In an attempt to build on the success of the $1.31 billion-grossing film, Warner Bros. and D.C. want to bring to life different aspects of the Aquaman story. So, before jumping into the sequel, the studio plant put into production a spinoff that focuses on The Trench, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This upcoming film is said to follow the creatures that terrorized Aquaman and Mera (Amber Heard) during a scene in the Aquaman movie. However, Aquaman and Mera are not set to appear in the project.

"We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie," Aquaman producer Peter Safran told The Hollywood Reporter. "Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did... We just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2."

The dark and suspenseful world of The Trench is sure to be an innovative take on the Aquaman franchise. This is because Safran is no stranger to scary movies. In fact, one of his close collaborators is Walter Hamada who he helped bring to life the Conjuring universe. As a result, The Trench is suspected to be an entertaining, "horror-tinged" film.
