A 15-month-old female gorilla was killed Friday in an accident involving a hydraulic door at the San Francisco Zoo.

The rare gorilla, named Kabibe, was crushed when it ran under the closing door as the animals were being moved from their main enclosure into an area where they sleep, after the zoo had closed, NBC News reported.

Kabibe was born in the summer of 2013. She needed round-the-clock care for the first six months after her birth, which has reportedly made the death extra hard on the zoo's keepers.

The zoo released a statement reading: "Some animal deaths are more difficult to process than others and this tragedy has struck us all in the deepest way imaginable."
