Ava DuVernay says "I'm getting my 'Shonda' on" in a new interview with Reel Black filmed this week at the Sundance Film Festival.
The Selma director was referring to her first foray into creating a TV show, the upcoming Queen Sugar, which will air for 13 episodes on Oprah's OWN network. The series is adapted from the novel of the same name, about a woman who moves back home to New Orleans from Los Angeles after her father dies and leaves her a sugarcane plantation.
In the interview, DuVernay says the show will have an all-woman directorial team, mostly drawn from the "black independent film space," although she didn't name any names.
One name we do know already: Rutina Wesley, who played Tara Thornton on HBO's True Blood. She'll star in Queen Sugar as the main character, Nova Bordelon.
