Disney is developing a third film in its Princess Diaries trilogy.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Anne Hathaway has not yet been confirmed, though sources say the threequel will be a “continuation of the Hathaway-led series of films rather than a reboot.”

The script is being penned by Aadrita Mukerji (Supergirl), with Debra Martin Chase returning as producer for a third go-round. Screenwriter Melissa Stack is executive producing.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hathaway expressed her desire to participate in a third Princess Diaries film.

“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,” shared Hathaway, who celebrated her 40th birthday last week. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”

Andrews, 87, reiterated Hathaway’s comments, telling ET she’s also ready to reprise her role in a third film.

“I might just be a little too old a granny for it, I don’t know,” said the star of classics like The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. “It depends what the story is, and if they can come up with something, that would be wonderful. But if not, there will be other things.”

Released in 2001, The Princess Diaries was a box office hit, earning $165.3 million globally. Hathaway and Andrews returned in ’04’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which introduced the world to Chris Pine en route to taking home $134.7 million at the global box office.
