Back in the summer of 2009, the Black Eyed Peas submitted the longest unbroken stay at No. 1 in the history of Billboard’s Hot 100, as the group spent 26 consecutive weeks atop the chart with their hit songs, “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling.”

Considering neither song has aged particularly well, the Black Eyed Peas’ back-to-back No. 1 singles offered prime fodder for this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live, which was highlighted by musical guest Lizzo making her return to the NBC sketch show

One of the standout skits from last night’s edition of SNL saw Lizzo and cast members Kenan Thompson, Chris Redd, Bowen Yang, and Cecily Strong reimagine a hypothetical Interscope studio session that birthed “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling.”

As Kenan, portraying Will.i.am, sings the track’s signature “boom boom boom”s, Aidy Bryant, in the role of the Peas’ producer, reminds the group that those lines are supposed to be “temp lyrics describing the beat of the track.”

Lizzo chimes in: “Yeah, you were supposed to replace them with your own lyrics — you know, like words.”
