After a few brief glimpses, HBO has finally unveiled the first actual teaser trailer for their new Watchmen series.
Based on the 1986 comic of the same name by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Watchmen is set in a grounded but dark reality in which superheroes are treated as nothing more than outlaws. Created by Damon Lindelof of Lost and The Leftovers, the show is the second adaption of the graphic novel, following Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder's 2009 film. Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Jeremy Irons, and Jean Smart are all set to star, among others.
Upon the announcement of the project, it was teased that Lindelof's take will diverge from Snyder's, which was more of a straightforward adaptation. Lindelof instead will pick up the story a number of years after the original comic ended, focusing mostly on the ramifications of everything that went down. Set against political turmoil, specifically in regard to Cold War tensions between America and Russia, the 12-issue comic is often regarded as one of the best of all time.
Unfortunately, the show doesn't have a premiere date just yet, but HBO teases that it will arrive before the end of the year. To make the wait even more unbearable, it's also worth pointing out that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are providing the score, making this their second soundtrack for TV following their work on the 2017 PBS docuseries The Vietnam War.
